The turn from the private ruminations of Prufrock to the public world of urban satire was negotiated with a certain awkwardness and uncertainty in Eliot's career, but it pointed the way for the poetry that would come. After The Waste Land, and probably because of Eliot's success, his contemporaries began to announce their intentions to write long, public poems.

Finally, he turned to the long poem, claiming that he had had it in mind since the beginning of his career, although in a lifetime of immense productivity, this poem refused to form itself. Like Eliot, Williams had uncertainties of conception and purpose which troubled him the more because he imagined he had made accommodations for them in his open and generous conception of form. Pitting himself against Eliot, Williams found nonetheless that he could not escape the creative dilemmas he had mistakenly attributed to Eliot's erudition.
